Was sind Podcasts / What are Podcasts?

A podcast is essentially a radio show delivered over the internet. It is recorded by the podcast host, encoded as an MP3 file (the same format you use for your digital music) and then uploaded to the internet. You as a listener can then download the audio file and listen to it; either directly on the computer, or on your mobile device. You can also subscribe to the podcast feed using special software (a podcast client), and then you get new episodes of a podcast onto your mobile phone automatically when they are released. Podcasts sind im Grunde Radiosendungen, die über das Internet verbreitet werden. Die Herausgeber nehmen den Podcast auf, typischerweise als MP3-Datei (die Du von Deiner digitalen Musik kennst) und laden die Datei ins Internet hoch. Als Hörer kannst Du die Datei herunterladen und anhören; entweder auf dem Computer oder Deinem Mobiltelefon. Du kannst den Podcast auch abonnieren, mittels sogenannter Podcast Clients, und bekommst dann jede neue Folge automatisch auf Dein Handy geladen.


 

Warum lange Gespräche/Why long conversations?

Podcasts have no time limit because, in contrast to a radio show, it does not have to fit into a specific schedule. Because they are archived on the internet and available pretty much forever, their sweet spot, in terms of content and format, is different from radio: radio tends to broadcast timely, short(er) contents, whereas podcasts typically focus on longer background/explanatory content. Relaxed conversations are just the best way of implementing this format. Podcasts haben keine Zeitbeschränkungen, da sie, im Gegensatz zu Radiosendungen, in kein Sendeschema passen müssen. Deshalb, und weil sie im Netz quasi für immer verfügbar sind, hat sich für Podcasts eine eigene Nische ergeben: Radio versendet aktuelle, meist kürzere Beiträge, wohingegen Podcasts lange, detaillierte, eher Hintergrund-orientierte Inhalte erhalten. Entspannte Gespräche sind dafür das beste Format.

Podcasts are the format to do this: because they do not use your hands or eyes, you can listen to them while doing chores, while walking in the woods, or while driving your car; time that would otherwise be “lost”. In der heutigen Zeit komplexer Zusammenhänge und O-Ton-Medien ist ein Format, in dem man Themen ausführlich diskutieren und erklären kann, essentiell. Audio-Podcasts sind das ideale Format dafür, denn sie benötigen weder Augen noch Hände. Man kann sie hören während der Hausarbeit, im Wald beim Laufen oder beim Autofahren.

 

How do I listen? Wie höre ich das an?

You can listen directly on the website, both on your PC as well as on a mobile device. Every episode page (such as this or that) has the same structure, as shown in the picture below. It begins with the title and the listener rating: click on star one through five to rate the episode. The big “play” button in the player lets you listen to the show. You can also click on the chapters to skip to topics you are especially interested in. Below the player there’s a short summary of the conversation, plus links for further reading for each chapter. At the bottom there’s a big button to save the MP3 file to your local computer. Once you have downloaded it, you can play it by double-clicking onto the file, which launches your computer’s audio. Du kannst Dir jede Episode direkt auf der Webseite anhören, auf dem PC und auf dem Mobiltelefon. Jede Episodenseite, (bspw. diese oder jene) hat dieselbe, unten gezeigte Struktur. Die Seite beginnt mit dem Titel und der Bewertung: bitte klicke auf Stern 1 bis 5 um die Episode zu bewerten. Der große “Play” Knopf im Player spielt die Episode direkt im Browser ab. Durch Klicken auf die Kapitelmarken kannst Du direkt zu dem Thema springen das Dich besonders interessiert. Unterhalb des Players findet sich die Zusammenfassung des Gesprächs sowie weiterführende Links zu jedem Kapitel. Am Ende der Seite ist der Knopf, um die MP3-Datei auf Deinem Computer zu speichern. Dort kann sie dann abgespielt werden: Doppelklick auf die MP3-Datei startet den Audioplayer und spielt die Datei ab.


 

How do I subscribe? Wie abonniere ich das?

If you listen to omega tau (or other podcasts) regularly, you should get a podcast client so you can subscribe to the show and get new episodes downloaded automatically. Typically, podcast clients are used on mobile devices. A good overview of popular client apps can be found here). To subscribe to omega tau, you can use the Subscribe button, as shown below. Click on the green button that fits your preference (only German, only English, or all Episodes). The button dialog opens and highlights the feed you are about to subscribe to; press Continue. You are then prompted to select the app in which you want to subscribe to the show, the list is specific to your platform. After you select the respective podcast client, the app should open with the “subscribe” page opened so you can subscribe easily. Wenn Du omega tau (oder andere Podcasts) regelmäßig hörst, solltest Du Dir einen Podcast-App besorgen, sodass Du neue Episoden automatisch bekommst. Typischerweise werden Podcastclients auf Mobilgeräten verwendet, ein guter Überblick über Podcast-Apps findet sich hier und hier. Um omega tau zu abonnieren, kannst Du die “Subscribe” Buttons verwenden, wie im Bild unten gezeigt. Klicke auf den grünen Abonnieren/Subscribe Button, je nachdem, welchen Feed Du abonnieren möchtest (nur Deutsch, nur English, oder alle Episoden). Dann geht ein kleiner Dialog auf und bestätigt den zu abonnierenden Podcast-Feed (Schritt 2). In Schritt 3 kannst Du dann die Podcast-App auswählen, mit der Du den Podcast abonnieren willst. Die möglichen Auswahlen sind spezifisch für Deine Plattform. Nachdem Du eine App ausgewählt hast, sollte diese in ihrer “Subscribe” Seite öffnen, sodass Du den Podcast leicht abonnieren kannst.
