This is the first of several episodes from my trip to Airbus Toulouse: we cover flight testing of the A350. We have two guests. First, we speak with Peter Chandler, a test pilot at Airbus, about envelope expansion, the relationship between simulation and the real airplane, and test flying in general. Our second guest is Pascal Verneau, a test flight engineer. We discuss his role in flight testing, as well as some special equipment installed in (some of) the testing aircraft.

Wieder eine sehr beeindruckende Folge! Erstaunlich wie “normal” Peter, seinen Job sieht, obwohl er doch eigentlich ständig an die Grenzen geht.
Was ich einmal einfach deponieren möchte, weil es sonst keiner sagt: Es ist eine Schande, das Franzosen, obwohl sie in internationalen Berufen und Unternehmen tätig sind, so schlecht englisch sprechen! Das Potential für Fehler, Missverständnisse und Katastrophen ist schon in einwandfreiem Englisch nicht null!
Ich erinnere mich an das Thema der französischen Tower-Kommunikations-Diskussion in CDG! Nationalstolz in allen Ehren, aber bei sicherheitsrelevanten Themen hat das nichts zu suchen!

I had the same warm feeling when I saw the Windows screen the first time ;) Besides the connectivity solution Airbus did a good job there. You could basically plug in any laptop and it would work (i.e. display its content and use KCCU input) since the interface is pretty standard. That’s pretty strange for the aviation industry ;)
It would’ve loved to here a bit more about stall recovery. This is a rather hard task in modern airliners if you look at recent accidents (AF447, Air Asia). Not only that the manouver itself is hard but there are additional challenges to the crew like zero G, stress, etc.
Thanks Markus for another great episode. When I was listening to the talk I happened to thinking if anybody ever parachutes out of planes like the A350 when Peter talked about the chute out the belly of the plane. I guess to fully test the plane they should strap a parachute to the test pilot and throw him town there; that is if they can catch him. Reminded me of how Dave was trying to get HAL to open the pod bay doors in the 2001 film. :-)
