Was ist ein Podcast?

Podcasts sind mehr oder weniger “Internet-Radio”. Im Gegensatz zu früheren Formen des Online-Radio, wird der Audio-Inhalt nicht live ausgestrahlt, sondern als MP3-Dateien zum Download zur Verfügung gestellt. Üblicherweise produzieren Podcasts in regelmäßigen Abständen (täglich, wöchentlich, monatlich. ..) neue Episoden. Statt des manuellen Downloads können Podcasts auch automatisch auf den Client Rechner heruntergelander werden. Dazu verwendet man sogenannte Podcasting Clients (wie bspw. Apples iTunes). Wenn man einen Podcast abonniert, bekommt man neue Episoden automatisch auf seinen Rechner (oder seinen mobilen MP3 Player) heruntergeladen.

What is a Podcast?

Podcasts are more or less “internet radio”.
In contrast to earlier forms of online radio, the audio content is not streamed but
made available for download as MP3 files. Most podcasts publish episodes in regular
intervals (daily, weekly, monthly). Instead of the manual download, podcasts can be
automatically delivered to your computer by subscribing to an RSS feed. To this end
you can use so-called podcasting clients such as Apple iTunes.

Wie finde ich Podcasts?

Erstens per Google. Zweitens mittels des iTunes Store (auch wenn es “Store” heißt, ist sowohl die Software als auch 99% aller Podcasts umsonst. Zum Suchen und Downloaden ist keine Kreditkarte oder ähnliches nötig). Drittens gibt es eine ganze Reihe von Podcast Verzeichnissen, darunter podcast.de oder podcastalley.com. Ich habe hier auch eine Linkliste zu guten Podcasts.

How do I find podcasts?

First, via Google. Second, via the iTunes Store (although it is called “store” the software as well as 99% of all podcasts are free; you don’t need a credit card for browsing or downloading content). Thirs, there is a number of podcast directories such as podcast.de or podcastalley.com. You can also take a look at my recommendations.

Wer produziert Podcasts?

Aus unserer Sicht gibt es drei Arten von Podcasts.

• Zunächst sind da die von Amateuren produzierten Podcasts. Dazu zählen omega tau, oder auch Software Engineering Radio.
• Zum zweiten gibt es die professionell produzierten, dazu gehören sicherlich die Podcasts bei TWiT, Cranky Geeks oder der Podcast von Nature. Oft sind diese mit anderen Publikationen (Print, Webseiten) assoziiert.
• Zum dritten gibt es dann noch die Radiosendungen, die einfach als Podcast “wiederverwertet” werden (beispielsweise NPR Science Friday oder der Podcast von SWR1 Leute).

Who produces podcasts?

From our perspective there are three kinds of podcasts:

• There are those produced by amateurs. This includes omega tau and Software Engineering Radio.
• Second, there are professionally/commercially produced podcasts such as TWiT, Cranky Geeks or the podcast of Nature. Often they are associated with other publications (website, magazine)
• Third, there are regular radio programs that are “reused” as podcasts. A good example is NPR Science Friday.
