Ich höre zur Zeit an der Uni eine Vorlesung zu diesem Thema und konnte noch einmal ein paar weitere Einblicke in die Numerik gewinnen.

Noch ein allgemeiner Vorschlag: Wie wäre es, wenn Ihr denn die Themen vorweg auf Eure Weg-Site stellt und den Hörern ein Möglichkeit gebt (ohne Garantie der Übernahme!) dazu Fragen und Anregungen zu hinterlassen? Das würde Euch vielleicht die Vorbereitung eines Themas erleichtern, denn man merkt den einzelnen Episoden natürlich an, wie viel Background beim Interviewer vorhanden ist. Das letzte jetzt bitte nicht als Kritik auffassen, denn wenn man den Background nicht merken würde wäre das Thema trivial oder der Interviewer ein Genie. Damit würdet Ihr (s.o. „ohne Garantie“) die Hoheit über das Thema ja nicht abgeben…

Was man auch machen könnte ist eine Abstimmung über relevante Themen. Ich z.B. fände eine Episode über computerbasierten (Aktien-)Handel interessant…

Allerdings muss ich zugeben, das die Folge dann doch auch die Grenzen dessen aufzeigt, was man gerade noch mit reinem Audio erklaeren kann. Ich musste ein paarmal stoppen, Begriffe nachlesen und Teile nochmal hoeren, um die Zusammenhaenge zu verstehen.

I don’t think you should sell yourself short though. While for example a good grasp of neuroanatomy and a bit of psychology helps in the case of perception, as long as the guest is willing to talk your ear off about his/her field (which they usually are), I think it works out.

As to the question you raised at the end of the episode I’d like to just mention that even though I’m notoriously bad at this feedback thing what you do really is highly appreciated!

While the general science/tech coverage (newspapers , radio, documentaries, podcasts) makes it fairly easy to keep up on stuff outside your own field, I’ve found that’s not really the case when it comes to engineering (suggestions always appreciated!).

It can be hard to find a good balance between depth and accessibility but I think you hit the sweet spot most of the times, the somewhat long format and presupposed knowledge lets you get a better grasp of the subject.

I’d also like to give two thumbs up for more biology/medicine-coverage but maybe I’m biased. ;)

ja, FlightGear oder auch XPlane wären sicherlich Folgen wert. Ich
tu’s auf meine Liste :-)

Gibt es denn ganz viele Anfragen (oder gar Beschwerden…kaum vorstellbar!) wegen Übersetzungen der englischen Episoden?
Ich mag mich täuschen, aber gehört Englisch heute nicht zur “Grundausstattung” wenn man in technischen Berufen unterwegs ist?
Das frage ich mich, weil die Umfrage ja überwiegend HörerInnen aus diesem Sektor aufgezeigt hat.
Vielleicht eine Fehleinschätzung meinerseits, da ich zu den “few other`s” gehöre, die nicht aus der IT oder Tech-Branche kommen ;-)

Den Sound finde ich i.d.R. total akzeptabel und – da schliesse ich mich meinem Vorredner an – manchmal sogar richtig super, wie im Falle der Tom-Jones-Episode.
Es ist ein freier Podcast und keine super-highend-BBC-Produktion oder sowas.
Und hey, immerhin seid Ihr international unterwegs (jedenfalls per Fon und Skype) und kriegt absolut interessante Leute an die Leitung (ich verweise z.B. auf die Folgen mit John Ellis, die Episoden habe ich mir schon mehrfach angehört!)

My impression was that you are meanwhile put in a position that sets you kind of at the same level with journalists. This would require objectivity and verification such as double checks of given information.

Perhaps some listeners should realize that your podcast operates as a hobby – of course with a lot of effort and high professional standards, but also with the fun of it and your own opinions and directions of where you “steering” the discussion.

About the same topic is the audio quality - as far as I am concerned I mostly took it as satisfactory and thought it to be obvious that discussions with people at the other side of the earth cannot presented in studio quality. (BTW, the Skype conversation with Tom Jones for me sounded really good!)

For me it is kind of the genuine, authentic way of presenting this podcast, which makes it living and human.

As one of the few non IT- or engineering-related listeners I appreciate every single episode and the variation of topics very much. The few themes in which I really was not interested at all, i just did not listen to or cancelled listening after a while…

And I think it is politically correct not to put some of the sensible themes into a political context. Military related machines always are ethically critical because of their use as weapons – nevertheless they are very interesting items of engineering science! I say this as a “Zivildienstleistender” who is not to convinced of army aims and so on. But we all know that the most effort – and money – is spent for military purposes. And sometimes we all take our benefits from these developments, such as GPS or earth surveillance…

My conclusion: don’t try to be TOO professional, just put technical progress as it comes along and is easy to use – meanwhile I am quite satisfied with your format as it actually is. (I really should look after this Podlove stuff, interesting…)

One thing I might recommend is that you spend a bit more time editing audio if the interviewee has a thick accent as the gain in quality would be noticeable.

This could be too much of an ethics question but if you were able to create fully functioning AI (Independently think, feel, be objective about things, etc..) would that make the maker personally responsible for their creation. Is there any ethics over switching it off if the AI doesn’t play ball.
In other words if a real child had a tantrum you have to put up with it but what is the case if a machine has one… And knows it’s having one?

Wie so oft, faszinierte mich auch bei dieser Sendung der detaillierte Einblick in eine an für sich alltägliche Arbeit, den man sonst nie und nimmer hat. Themen, über die man sich sonst gar keinen Kopf macht, werden so zum Aha-Effekt, wo man denkt: “hey, richtig, so einfach ist das ja gar nicht!” oder “Ach? So macht man das? Hätte ich mir nie so vorgestellt!”…

Als ebenfalls ehemaliger Zivi in der Allgemeinen Chirurgie hatte ich auch gewisse Deja-Vu- oder vielmehr Deja-Ecouté-Erlebnisse und verstehe jetzt vieles besser, worüber ich mich früher nicht mal zu wundern getraute… ;-)

Beatrice Mueller gave an interesting insight to the foamy aspects of our solar system. I liked the image of the lighter elements bumping, bonding and building up out in the periphery and then falling into the middle with gravitational resonances.

It’s probably too late but when talking about the moon it would be good if you could ask just how much the moon moves the Earth’s crust either directly through gravity or indirectly through tidal pressure. Surely the weight of the extra water, particularly around this time of the year with the yule tides, has some effect.

Regrettably this was the first podcast that I did rated less than 5/5. This was solely because of the interviewer not giving you enough opportunity to conduct the interview as well as you have proven to do with all the other I have had the pleasure of listening to. Although Dr Pilcher may have respectable qualifications and experience he came across as more of a politician if you know what I mean. I was particularly put off when he answered a plain straightforward question is a lot of complicated jargon and scientific babble. That indicates either an arrogant nature or a defensive manoeuvre by someone who doesn’t know the answer. Given that the question was fairly straight forward and Dr Pilcher ought to know the answer then him not understanding the question indicates that he is not a very good listener. This was also manifested throughout the interview when he interrupted and talked over you. Sorry but that’s how it came across.

On a more pleasant note, I was delighted to have heard the musical interludes. They, somehow, give an interview a more pleasant experience. Sort of like cushions. If you bring back music into your interviews then I suggest you not tack them onto the end where they are left dangling; insert them into the talk itself.

This was an interesting and diverse topic. Pleased to hear significant concepts like the Nash equilibrium, zero-sum, symmetry and scenarios like the prisoner’s dilemma and the dictators game discussed in a way that even I could understand.

For one reason or another, I’m having a close look at the Cuban missile crisis at the moment. I wasn’t aware that it was 50 years ago to the day when the world moved back from the edge of a full scale nuclear war. It was interesting to hear parts of your talk alluding to the use of game theory.

Towards the end it was also disheartening, in a way, to hear the rationalisation of and moral hazards like bankruptcy. Perhaps we will, through game theory, foresee the consequences of immoral behaviour and introduce more ethical standards through social reform (eg environment, famine, rights etc).

Mike Hunter has obviously been doing his thing for many years. Spoke plainly and simply in a humble, down-to-earth sort of way.

Merillion sounded a bit like an old favourite group of mine called Wishbone Ash ( http://www.last.fm/music/Wishbone+Ash?ac=wishbone+ash ).

I was reminded of the paragliding incident in 2007 where a person was sucked up to 32,000 ft. Here’s a link to the story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6369923.stm . It happened to have occurred in my home town of Manilla, Australia. Comparing a motor-glider (with its power and instrumentation) and hang-glider is like comparing a car and a bicycle.

Danke für den Hinweis. Dann kann ich das also auch zu den urbanen Mythen zählen. Man erzählt sich das sehr mit der Puppe sehr oft und daher habe ich das für bare Münze genommen. Wieder was gelernt, Danke!

Aber die U-Bahn Nürnberg zählt dennoch zur ersten automatisierten U-Bahn in Deutschland. 2008 wurde RUBIN in Betrieb genommen. Der Unterschied zur U-Bahn München ist eben die Vollautomatisierung mittels ATO- und ATP-Fahrzeugrechner sowie Bahnsteig-Gleis-Beobachtung und Überwachung mittels Kameras und Hochfrequenz-Transpondern.

Mit LZB oder anderen Fahrsicherungssystemen kann man theoretisch jede U-Bahn automatisch fahren lassen. Das ist ja wegen des in sich geschlossenen Systems recht einfach…

Wieder eine sehr schöne Episode zu einem interessanten Thema. Ein paar Anmerkungen hab ich zum automatischen U-Bahn-Betrieb.

In Nürnberg sind die Linien U2 und U3 (die einen Teil der Strecke gemeinsam nutzen) automatisch und fahrerlos betrieben. Eine “Puppe”, die den Fahrgästen vorgaukelt, es würde jemand den Zug fahren, gibt es aber nicht. Tatsächlich wurden die ersten Automatikzüge vom Typ DT3 so gestaltet, dass möglichst vielen Fahrgästen ein freier Blick auf die Strecke ermöglicht wird, dies wird auch oft genutzt. Die Nachfolgebaureihe DT3F verfügt über einen Fahrerstand, damit die Züge auch auf der konventionell betriebenen Linie U1 eingesetzt werden können.

Dennoch ist automatischer Zugbetrieb mit Fahrer nichts Besonderes: Die Züge der Münchner U-Bahn fahren bereits seit 1971 bis heute computergesteuert. Der Fahrer übernimmt nur die Abfertigung und gibt den Startbefehl. Auch in Berlin gab es mehrfach Versuche: Auf der Linie U4 mit dem SELtrac-System und auf der Linie U9 mit dem LZB-System von Siemens. Auf beiden Linien wird aber inzwischen wieder manuell gefahren.

Just back from a long walk. Listened to your podcast on quantum computing. There were interesting concepts. Very complicated. Had to take some notes.

Martin said clearly it’s early days for quantum computing. Seems we are still at the embryonic stage. Not even at the ENIAC valve and pre-memory accumulator level. My gut-feeling is that quantum computing will use fuzzy logic rather than digital. The statistical nature and mathematical models seem to be heading that way. If it turns out to be digital then I can see it being on a higher level with the microcode of the firmware using fuzzy logic set of operations.

When Martin talked about possible breakthroughs using Shor’s algorithm and molecular modelling to achieve superconductivity at room temperatures I can see the effort being worthwhile. No doubt, when quantum computing gets off the ground, so to speak, it will be used to accelerate its own development. Look at flight.

I am a little concerned about Martin’s enthusiasm about sensing. A quantum computer that can sense has the potential to develop self-awareness and consciousness; and I don’t mean just passing a Turing test. Look at what happened to HAL in 2001; not to mention Terminator.

As far as music is concerned, I found the interludes refreshing. I’ll go along with the majority though.

I have just listened to this podcast. As usual, it was excellent. I particularly like the way you can recap so well what your interviewees say. It’s a sign of good listening and articulation.

I don’t usually provide feedback to any of the various podcasts that I listen to. It seems to be something that you want; and I can understand why. It might seem as though you are putting in a lot of effort for nothing. I can assure you that, if I am a typical listener, your podcasts are greatly appreciated. I suppose it’s just that we are not inclined to put effort into giving feedback. I’ll provide feedback on your site about the other podcasts that I have listened to.

I can’t understand the negativity that you talked about. Perhaps the person was simply trying to provide some constructive criticism from their point of view. Perhaps they have an aggressive style of communicating. I wouldn’t take it to heart if I was you.

Like I mentioned in my other (and first) feedback that I provided on iTunes after hearing my first Omega Tau podcast (the one on the Standard Model of Particle Physics); listening to your podcasts is like over-hearing a relaxed conversation between two mates on a bus.

I particularly like listening to your podcasts on my long walks. I guess it’s the rhythm and the blood circulating to my brain. I can focus on what is said for prolonged periods of time; provided I’m not distracted by what’s going on around me or wondering where I’m going. I generally follow well-trodden paths away from the traffic.

I’m in process of working my way backwards through the podcasts and wanted to note that this podcast had a piece of information startlingly important for me — how viruses might trigger cancer. I’m a cancer survivor that had a viral infection (shingles) just a few months prior. Thank you especially for that information, as well as the other info in this and other episodes.

BTW, I think it’s better to drop the music that you used to have. For people who don’t share the same musical tastes, it was just a distraction from the good stuff. But thanks for experimenting with the concept.

Fünf bis zehn Meter vor dem Einlass ist die Spitze des Kegels. Das Gitter soll Enten ablenken.

Problem:
Die Ente darf das Gitter nicht durchschlagen und sie darf sich nicht im Gitter verklemmen. Das kann kein filigranes Teil sein.
Die Ente kommt nur bei 100 m/s. Das Gitter stört aber noch bei 250 m/s.

Konkret:
Wie dick und in welchem Abstand müssen die Streben sein, und was macht das mit der anströmenden Luft?

Hat man so etwas schon mal getestet, oder ist das schon über den Daumen gepeilt unmöglich?
So eine Erklärung habe ich leider noch nicht im Web gefunden. Es wäre doch schön, wenn diese Erklärung hier erscheint.

As the name suggests, spin was originally conceived as the rotation of a particle around some axis. This picture is correct so far as spins obey the same mathematical laws as quantized angular momenta do. On the other hand, spins have some peculiar properties that distinguish them from orbital angular momenta:

• Spin quantum numbers may take on half-odd-integer values;
• Although the direction of its spin can be changed, an elementary particle cannot be made to spin faster or slower.
• The spin of a charged particle is associated with a magnetic dipole moment with a g-factor differing from 1. This could only occur classically if the internal charge of the particle were distributed differently from its mass.

Eine kleine Anmerkung zur Verwendbarkeit von Quaternionen: sie eignen sich wunderbar z.B. in der 3D-Computergraphik, um Drehungen zu berechnen, ohne dabei in ein Problem zu laufen, welches man bei “normalen” Drehungen per Euler-Winkeln hätte: den Gimbal Lock oder auch kardanische Blockade (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimbal_lock). Insofern also ein gar nicht mal so abwegiges Konstrukt sondern im Gegenteil ein fast schon allgegenwärtiges.

Videos oder Folien würden wohl eher ablenken als helfen, die Form des Gesprächs erlaubt halt viel konzentrierteren Umgang mit Themen.

Falls irgendwann doch einmal Video, dann bitte nur in der Form, dass man die Sprechenden sieht, so bliebe es rein optional und würde auch nicht so ablenken wie blöde Folien ;-)

das mit der Soundqualität ist halt so eine Sache. Der Mensch war nur per Skype erreichbar, und saß wohl in einem Eimer (klang jedenfalls so, vom Hall her). Da habe ich net sooo viel Einfluß drauf. Das Gespräch dann abbrechen und verschieben (“finde erst mal nen besseren Raum”) ist halt auch schwierig. Und sein australischer Dialekt hat uns Europäern sicher auch nicht geholfen. Mit anderen Worten: klar, schade dass es so suboptimal ist, aber so arg viel tun kann ich leider nicht.

Zwei Anmerkungen möchte ich noch machen:
Automatische Landungen sind SEHR selten, und zwar aus zwei Gründen:
1. macht manuell landen einfach mehr Spaß und ist gut für die Übung :)
2. dürfen wir nur automatisch landen, wenn der Flughafen offiziell “Low Visibility Procedures” ausruft (CAT2 bzw. CAT3). Dies beinhaltet aber auf Flughafenseite viele Einschränkungen, z.B. Redundanz der Stromversorgung, größere Freihalteflächen entlang der Landebahn, d.h. die auf den Start wartenden Flugzeuge müssen weiter entfernt warten, brauchen also länger, um dann zum Start auf die Bahn zu rollen, was wiederum bedeutet, die Staffelung wird größer, es passen also weniger Flieger pro Stunde auf die Bahn. Das gleiche gilt für die Flugzeuge im Anflug. Auch müssen je nach Flughafen-Layout bestimmte Rollwege komplett gesperrt werden und manchmal ist es sogar nötig, bestimmte Hallentore geschlossen oder geöffnet zu halten, um die Signalgenauigkeit des ILS sicherzustellen. Also alles Sachen, die der Flughafen nicht gern und somit nur dann tut, wenn es absolut nötig ist.

2. Zum Thema ADS, bzw. CPDLC (Controller Pilot Data Link Communication), also die Möglichkeit des Controllers, Anweisungen per “Telex” an uns Piloten zu schicken:

Generell ist es so, dass wir (zumindest hier aufm Airbus) einen kleinen Extramonitor haben, auf dem die Nachrichten auflaufen und Statusanzeigen zu sehen sind. Wir müssen diese Anweisungen dann bestätigen oder ablehnen und dann selbst ausführen (z.B. Höhenwechsel).
Momentan wird das vor allem in Gebieten benutzt, die eine schlechte, bzw. keine UKW (VHF) Funkabdeckung haben, also z.B. über dem Atlantik, über Teilen von Afrika und auf einem chinesischen Airway über dem Himalaya. Außerdem läuft seit einigen Jahren bei Maastricht Control (oberer Luftraum nördliches Deutschland und Benelux) ein Test mit CPDLC, dort müssen die meisten Anweisungen aber per Funk zurückgelesen werden.

ich wollte eine kurze Ergänzung zum ILS Anflug bzw. Sendeanlagen geben. Es wurde kurz gesagt das der Localizer auch von der “falschen Seite” arbeiten würde aber das ja keinen Sinn machen würde. Either way, the future sure sounds interesting!

A note on the wingtip vortices, sometimes our fighters (the more experienced guys at least) will fly in the efficient sweet-spot off of and behind our wingtips, since our KC-10 generates some pretty BIG vortices, especially when heavy on fuel!
They only do this for maybe 20 minutes at a time when slightly short on fuel and we don’t have quite enough fuel on board to top everyone up to what they want.
Not sure exactly how much fuel the fighters save, but the pilots say it’s significant.

Ich habe aber auch zwei Kritikpunkte: Zum einen finde ich, das ihr die Gespraechspartner gerne auch mal ausreden lassen koenntet. In der aktuellen Folge bspw. der arme Flow Operator, der jedesmal, wenn er was sagen wollte von euch unterbrochen wurde mit halbfalschen Wiederholungen und Ausschmueckungen dessen, was er vorher erzaehlt hat.

Und der zweite Punkt: Ja, ihr fliegt gerne, soviel ist klar ;) Aber muessen denn wirklich in jeder Folge irgendwelche verzweifelten Flugzeug-/Flugbetriebs-/Flugtechnik-Analogien fuer irgendwas kommen, das nun gar nichts mit dem Fliegen zu tun hat? :)

The big advantage of bitcoins over a gold standard is that they can be designed to be infinitely divisible. Right now they are finitely divisible to 8 decimal places (if I recall correctly).

Gold/silver standards require paper certificates/money after a few decades because you can only divide gold so far. Bitcoins are digital and can be subdivided as much as needed. It could be in 50 years that the cap of 21 million bitcoins could be worth trillions and trillions of dollars, but you can easily switch to a microBitCoin (1/1000000th of a BitCoin) standard if need be.

Bitcoins are designed to be as secure and trustworthy and safe an investment as physical gold while remaining as convenient and usable as a credit card (although it currently falls slightly short of credit-card convenience and gold-level security).

Warum auf iTunes etwas fehlt verstehe ich allerdings nicht. Ist ja die gleiche Datei, die da runtergeladen wird…. Seltsam.

Übrigens zur Bewertungsfunktion: Wenn man sich mal verklickt, was z.B. auf dem Smartphone schnell passiert, kann man nichts mehr korrigieren…

Eine schöne uralte Sicherungsmethode hat er noch vergessen: Den Staffelstab. Ist sehr eingeschränkt braucht aber noch nicht mal Telefon.

Alone, if the CIA is not capable of inventing such thing themselves, they should hand over their business better to Mossad i.a. ;-)

But never forget: with a fixed limit of max. available BitCoins, it MUST cause deflation – otherwise you must stop increasing productivity/innovation/etc. – because all year producing more and more goods (due a productivity-increasement of around 1 – 2%) causes the need that money floating around increases as well, resulting you can buy a penthouse with just one BitCoin, in lets say 2020…

just read about it in a major german online magazine, that means you are gonna become big – at least in germany;p

Like commentators above me i’m a little concerned about the deflation.
If the algorhytm is not crackable and the difficulty to create new coins is exponentially rising, the comparison to gold surely is near. maybe expect of its cultural impact (u cant hang bitcoins around your girlfriends neck^^).

But anyway, the problems that come along with those coins will be the same that came along with gold-based currencies, which means deflation.

That could actually lead into big time economic turbulances, since fresh money is steadily needed for investments. The past shows that the gold standard usually broke down after a couple of decades and was replaced by more flexible currencies.

There are enough examples, like the break-down of bretton woods, the feds decision to give out fiat money or the british central banks decision to give up the silver standard and many more (ancient currencies too btw).
Every time the standard was given up after huge economic problems. (too often wrong interpreted genius) John Maynard Keynes stated that a fixed currency standard is the wrongest thing u can do to an economy. Others – not less genius – said about the same.

One comment above said that it is no problem if the currency is replaced by something better if the coins flaw of increasing value is too big.
The problem with it is that usually that happens after something really bad happened. So my guess is that the coin has something like a build-in “best before” date in its algorhytm, after which the demand rises above the supply. As soon as that date is reached – and if the coin gets major attention of course – the system around it will neccessarily brake down.
I guess if you compare the coin creation function with the general coin usage function u can even calculate that day;p

A possible sollution to counter that day may be to built a currency above the coin that reflects its usage. A simple function that makes the overclocking curreny linear to the extension of its usage might do the trick. Thats basicly what central banks do and which means that the linearisation needs an independent authority that controlls ist. Not very sympathetic..
And in the idea of many overclocking functions and therefore many currencies isnt a real sollution too, because there would be competition and in the end the strongest wins, creating a monopoly of one currency and neccesarily one authority.

Another way may be something Silvio Gsell like with a date at which old coins expire. That needed a new information – the date – attached to every coin and on every transaction the date is checked if it is out of date. That way the algorhytms natural limitation could be extented whitout limit, old coins would get new dates and could be used again. The nice thing: it wouldnt need an authority for that. Problem is: whats the perfect expiration date? Friedman sais 15% per year, others say 2% and opportunists say it depends on the states state of dept;p But no one sais its -x%….

I’m sure there are plenty of other elegant ways to fix that deflation problem, just read some economists. (i wonder what Marx has to say about it^^⁾

Anyway wish u good luck with the project, hope u can fix ur problems with deflation and the CIA;p

RE: quantum crypto: there are schemes to move value from bitcoins to some future yet-to-be-designed quantum-secure system like bitcoin (involving spending your coins using a special transaction to move them from the bitcoin world into the qbitcoin world). I’ll start to worry when the quantum cryptographers can break 64-bit hashes or factor 64-bit numbers (bitcoin uses 256-bit hashes and keys).

@Hadrian: sure, competing currencies based on bitcoin is already starting to happen (there’s a list of them in the bitcoin forums). They’ll have a hard time competing unless they have significant advantages over bitcoin, because the “network effects” of a currency are very, very strong– currencies are more useful the more people accept them, and they get more valuable the more useful they are, attracing more people to use them, and so on.

@RB: it seems to me “currency is a store of human labor” is short-sighted. Currency is a store of value, and we value more than human labor– we value truth and beauty and tools that make our jobs easier as well as hard work. I value bitcoin because I think it is a tool that will, in the future, make it easier for me to do things like pay for a meal when I’m travelling in another country.

If I have no Bitcoins but wish to exchange my labor for a product, once my labor has been put on the table, Bitcoins should be issued to me, and then transferred by me to the provider of goods and services who is agreeable to the exchange.

Therein lies the rub. The whole system of Btcoin issuance needs to ultimately be tied the performance of REAL human labor, and not the solving of some mathematical equation, which is NOT REAL work. My computer is solving massive computations right now, as I speak, but unless it accomplishes something tangible, it is NOT “work”. Silicon chips digitally masturbating their bits on the quantum electron level does not REAL “work” make. So long as it takes REAL human effort to create food and shelter, then our currency must have a REAL basis, not virtual. Virtual “work” creating virtual “money”, exchanging for virtual “food” leads to REAL starvation. Once labor value has been stored in a currency, it must remain intact, and not inflated or deflated away. Any currency, especially a virtual one, that can be made a medium of speculation as source of wealth creation should be avoided like the plague. It is NOT what the world needs right now, which is an honest and rock stable storehouse of labor value.

Erst mal Danke für die neue Folge! Ich habe den omegatau podcast vor einigen Monaten entdeckt und war sofort begeistert und bin es immer noch.

Ich wollte noch anmerken, dass es in der letzten Ausgabe des National Geographic (leider seit letztem Freitag nicht mehr im Handel) einen Artikel über die Zähmung von wilden Tieren gab.
Dort wurde, neben Wölfen/Hunden und anderen Tieren, auch von Füchsen berichtet die innerhalb von 50 Jahren gezielter Zucht anscheinend ähnlich anhänglich sind wie Hunde und allgemein ähnliche Merkmale entwickelt haben.

However I dispute the notion that deflation is a bad thing. It simply means that goods and services become more affordable over time – which is exactly what SHOULD happen in any normal market.

As productivity improves we expect more bang for our buck. My first “proper” computer ran at 100Mhz, had 4MB of RAM and a 650MB hard drive. My mobile phone today has a 1Ghz CPU, nearly 800MB of RAM and an 8GB card smaller than my thumbnail – and it was cheaper than that first computer.

If central banks and governments quit increasing the money supply we would see prices steadily reduce all over. Instead we see the opposite in things that move slower than computing, such as food. They call it inflation.

I call it theft.

I’ve no idea of this bitcoin thing will take off or do well but I certainly hope so. :)

das war mal wieder eine schöne Sendung, Vielen Dank hierfür. Allerdins habe ich noch ergänzende Fragen bzw. Hinweise:

Zur zukünftigen Verwendung von Kavernen gerade auch richtung Energiespeicherung habe ich von Versuchen gehört, diese als unterirdische “Pumpspeicherkraftwerke” zu verwenden. Sozusagen als riesige Druckluftflasche in der die Überschüssige Netz-Energie per Kompressor gespeichert wird und be Bedarf eine Druckluftturbine angetrieben werden kann. Allerdings war hier der große Knackpunkt der Wirkungsgrad, da sich die Luft(oder Gas) beim Komprimieren erhitzt (und gekühlt werden muss) und beim dekomprimieren wieder extrem abkühlt (die Turbine musste vorgeheizt werden).
Irgendwie bestand der Trick darin, auch die Abwärme der Kompressoren zu speichern und dann widerzuverwenden. Was daraus geworden ist, weiß ich allerdings nicht mehr.

Was mich dann noch interessiert hätte wäre der Wirkungsgrad beim Einlagern von Gas; dies muss ja auch hochkomprimiert werden… und das braucht ja auch eine menge Energie.

In meinen Augen kamen in der Episode nur die Kugelhaufenreaktoren (im Verhältnis) etwas zu kurz. Ihre Rolle – Politik hin oder her – dürfte früher oder später eminent sein. Immerhin versprechen sie als einziger Reaktortyp ein inhärente Unmöglichkeit der Kernschmelze!

Omegatau ist wirklich sehr kompetent und sympathisch. Ich freue mich schon darauf, die Folgen zu hören, die ich noch nicht kenne!

I believe Gavin meant that a message encrypted with the public key can only be decrypted with the private key. Similarly a message encrypted with the private key can only be decrypted with the public key.

In a simple PK implementation there is no functional difference between the public and private key, except that we arbitrarily keep one secret and give the other away.

Minute 16: 2^256 is more atoms than found in the Earth.

This is strictly true. However, it’s also far more atoms than in the entire galaxy. It’s nearly as many atoms as in the observable universe (~2^266). So the statement “unlikely” approaches “impossible” given our current understanding of mathmatics, physics, and technology. However…

Minute 31: Gavin discussed the possibility of BitCoin becoming invalid or shutdown, due to a network or software bug.

A more likely scenario, is the implementation of quantum computing, which might be feasible within our life time. Quantum computing would also reduce many current cryptography systems to a trivial crack (along with ATM transactions, secure web browsing, and stock markets).

wollte mich für die tolle Folge bedanken. Ich habe während meines Studiums zwar einen Kurs in Reaktorphysik gemacht deshalb war das meiste bekannt aber viele kleine Details wurden doch nochmal klar.

Insgesamt finde ich sowieso das OmegaTau einer der besten deutschsprachigen Podcasts ist. Ihr schafft es fast immer die Fragen zu stellen die ich auch grade stellen wollen würde.

Herr Laurien ist grade leider im Ausland und kann daher kurzfristig sicher nichts beantworten.

Ich habe es so verstanden: so lang der Reaktor läuft kann er unabhängig arbeiten. Das hatte Herr Laurien ja auch erwähnt (Transformation für den Eigenbedarf, etc.). Das Problem entsteht bei der Kühlung der Nachzerfallswärme. Ich habe es so verstanden, dass in diesem Fall nicht mehr genug Energie produzierbar ist (mit der für den Betrieb ausgelegten Infratruktur) dass man das Ding kühlen kann.

If Guido is correct and a deflationary currency can’t work as “the” currency, then bitcoin will probably end up being like gold– not a currency we use every day, but something some people use as a long-term store of value.

Perhaps a bitcoin alternative that has built-in inflation and a different coin discovery algorithm will appear and will be more popular than bitcoin. There doesn’t have to be one choice, and competition is good!

As for bitcoin being a pyramid scheme: I think bitcoin is no more a pyramid scheme than a high-tech startup company is a pyramid scheme. I have invested in high-tech companies in the past because I think they have a great idea. I think people buy bitcoins for the same reason– they think that they will be ‘a better gold’ or ‘a better euro’ and will be more valued in the future.

As for the founders having lots of coins: yes, they will have lots of coins, assuming that they haven’t already traded them away. I think the early adopters deserve to make some money; the possibility of making money in the future is a great incentive to support the system and help it grow. It is not too late, by the way, to be an early adopter– all the bitcoins in the world are only worth about $5million. But do NOT buy any bitcoins unless you can afford to lose that money, and do NOT buy them if you think bitcoin is a pyramid scheme.

PS: The 10,000 bitcoins I bought for $50 last year funded the Bitcoin Faucet– I don’t have those bitcoins any more, I gave them away. And I am not personally sitting on a huge stash of coins; I’m hoping to earn bitcoins by providing useful bitcoin-related services.

Kann ein Reaktor, wenn er erstmal läuft, nicht von anderen äusseren (Strom-) Versorgern entkoppelt werden, und sich (und andere externe Verbraucher) von da an selbständig und unabhängig versorgen?

Damit wäre es doch mögliche ein Kraftwerk so zu konstruieren, daß es sich abschaltet, wenn es keinen Strom mehr produzieren kann!?

First the deflation thing. I the show about “Geld,Staat,Schulden” we heard a bit about how bad deflation is. Deflation is build in into bitcoin. So it could never be a good currency.

In the show you said “bitcoin my be a good investment”. Sure it may be – but only if you are an early bird on this. Gavin said he sent 50$ and they are worth 10000$ now. It is a – in german called “Schneeballsystem” – a pyramid scheme – a that again puts a big question mark on it from the legal point of view.

The founders will have thousands of bitcoins from the alpha and beta phase of the project where digging bitcoins only costs a few days. They are worth now real dollars and will become millions if the system grows. And who will pay these millions? We will – will we?

hab die Epsiode gestern bei der Fahrt ins Wochenende gehört und war (schon wieder) begeistert: ein tolles Gespräch, ich habe einiges gelernt. Ich hab Omega Tau am Zielort dann gleich mal weiter empfohlen.

Time Pritloves CREs höre ich auch sehr gern, die sind ob der manchmal doch geringen Informationsdichte besonders gut für’s Auto geeignet. Aber Omega Tau ist ganz klar mein Favorit.

ich fand den Podcast über das Thema Komplexität wirklich gut! Ich schreibe eher selten Rückmeldungen, aber für diese sehr gelungene Episode möchte mich dann doch herzlich bedanken.
Es ist Euch gelungen das Thema mit dem richtigen Maß an Details zu beleuchten. Was mir an Henning besonders gefallen hat, war die merkbar große Erfahrung im Umgang mit dem Thema ohne dass er sich dabei gleich in Details verloren hat.

Persönlich interessiert hätte mich noch die Einschätzung von Henning zum Thema nicht deterministische Algorithmen wie beispielsweise neuronalen Netzen.

Ihr habt es geschafft ein wirklich schwieriges Thema sehr uebersichtlich und in vielen wichtigen Facetten rueberzubringen, so dass der Hoerer alles verstehen kann und dennoch nicht unterfordert ist. Das lag zum einen daran, dass Henning ein absoluter Experte in dem Gebiet ist. Zum Anderen natuerlich dass ihr euch super vorbereitet habt, was man an vielen Stellen gemerkt hat.

Im Fuehren von Podcasts bist du mittlerweile schon auf einer Ebene mit Tim Pritlove mit seinen CREs. Ganz grossen Respekt und vielen Dank fuer die viele Arbeit, die dir wie man merkt ja auch Spass macht.

Darüber hinaus hat mir sehr gut gefallen wie du diesmal das Interview geleitet hast. Du warst mit vollem Interesse dabei, hast Sachverhalte oft kritisch hinterfragt und häufig nochmal mit eigenen Worten auf den Punkt gebracht, was dem ganzen Interview eine besondere Tiefe verliehen hat.

I think I know what you’re saying. I maybe got carried away a bit with effects and stuff – I don’t have much of a chance to play with effects etc. in the rest of the podcast :-)
I don’t have any cycles right now to do something about this, but I will keep it in mind.

We do have a tagline: “science and engineering in your headphones”.

Well, both ;) The opening sound (‘flush’) is a bit too much, on ‘Omega Tau’ there is some reverb (or something like that?) and the tagline sounds a bit ‘cheesy’ in my ears (besides, not everybody uses headphones …). This makes the jingle a bit amateurish.

No offense – I hope the comment is not too harsh.

When I think about it – many podcasts I know have some opening jingle/music but no tagline.

D.h. Unterbrechungsmusik brauch’ ich deshalb auch nicht. Musikgeschmack ist halt sehr unterschiedlich und mal passt es und mal eben nicht.

Von den Audiocasts, die ich so höre, haben nur wenige auch Musikstücke zwischendrin gestreut. Meistens gibt es eine kurze Intro-Musik und seltener auch noch ein Musikstück als Outro.

Die mit Musik habe auch deswegen Musik zwischendrin, weil sie im Radio laufen.

Der devradio Audiocast z.B. enthält die Mitschnitte aus einer Radiosendung und die stellen jeweils eine Version mit und ohne Musik zur Verfügung.

Klar, mit einem libsyn.com Account könnte das die Kosten erhöhen, wenn nach angebotenen MB abgerechnet wird.

Man könnte natürlich auch die Dateien in so einen Alternativ-Feed via Bittorrent anbieten – die Verwendung von Bittorrent in Feeds habe ich schon bei einen Audiocasts gesehen.

aus meiner Sicht eine sehr gute & informative Episode – auf jede Fall eine der besten Episoden. Ich bin sehr dafür, dass auch zur Realwirtschaft noch eine Episode aufgenommen wird. Ein Flattr dafür sei Markus und Nora versprochen ;-)

danke für Dein Feedback! Was die Musik angeht, gehen die Meinungen wirklich auseinander. Ich bekomme regelmäßig Feedback, dass den Leuten die Musik gefällt.

So lange sich da kein deutlicher Schwerpunkt Richtung “bitte keine Musik” einstellt, lass ich sie drinnen.

Ein Verbesserungsvorschlag: Bitte keine Musik als Unterbrechung im Podcast.

Wenn ich eine Pause machen will drücke ich auf Stop. Schließlich ist das hier keine Radio Sendung und alle laden sich den Podcast freiwillig runter um möglichst viele Informationen aufzusaugen.

Podcast hörer können lange Sendungen mit großer Faktendichte ab und brauchen keine vorgekauten kleinen Häppchen.

Mit Musik muss man immer zwischendurch vorskippen bis die musik vorbei ist, was (zumindest für mich) nervig ist.
