Just for clarification: there was indeed a direct data link between the AGC (Apollo Guidance Computer) and Mission Control. However the astronauts often preferred to type in the numbers themselves to stay on top of what's happening. Also, quite often the data that was voiced up was filled into checklists, so it was at hand for maneuvers in case the radio link would break down.

Apart from that, great podcast, enjoying it a lot! :)

It's kind of crass of us to think that we know what life we will find in space. Space ...infinite... with the infinite possibility of life that we can't even imagine. I hope you mean human life.
Sorry, but I feel that we are still arrogant and we need to grow up.

My favorite episode thus far, not to say the others weren't quality. I'm not entirely sure what your target audience is, but as a computer scientist and consumer of SE Radio, I have a strong interest in physics which unfortunately I usually only quench through conversations and technical articles.

I must admit I was suprised to hear Ms. Wing say that Mr. Marcus hit the money when he said that it was her intention to have practitioners realize the role computer science/computational thinking plays in their respective discipline because of the rise of computers. The message I perceived was that the processes/tools utilized by these practitioners could be refined by undergoing scrutiny, if you will, from the processes of computational thinking.

You mean "magnetos" rather than magnets. The purpose of the them (most plane engines have 2 per cylinder for redundancy) is to spin with the engine and mechanically generate energy to fire the spark plugs. The idea then is that if the battery dies or the alternator goes, the rotation of the engine will generate electricity to fire the plugs which fire the fuel in the cylinder and spin the engine.

I fly fixed winged piston planes, but I've never tried a glider before. Different!
