229 – (Ant-)Arctic Sea Ice

The sea ice in the arctic and antarctic regions of the earth is an especially sensitive indicator of the earth’s climate, and in particular, the current overall atmospheric temperature of the planet. It was recently reported to have reached a new low. Our guest, NASA’s Walt Meier explains why this is the case and which processes govern the increase or decrease of the ice. We then discuss how the ice mass is measured based on satellite and how its thickness is estimated based mostly on in-situ measurements. We cover climate modeling and its connection to sea ice and conclude with an outlook on future research.

Wieder eine sehr interessante Episode. Aber ich war ein kleines bisschen enttäuscht – vielleicht auch weil ich mich mit dem Thema Klimawandel selbst einigermaßen intensiv beschäftige. Zum einen wirkte Markus etwas weniger gut vorbereitet als sonst – vielleicht lags an dem fremden Skript? Schwarzkörperstrahlung hast Du doch normalerweise drauf ;-). Zum zweiten fand ich Walt Meier’s “We sense energy” etwas zu vereinfacht – wenn er (fast) überall “Radiation” gesagt hätte, wäre es für mich sowohl klarer als auch präziser gewesen. Ich hatte auch das Gefühl, er war sich nicht ganz sicher, auf welchem Niveau er antworten sollte. Und als drittes fehlte mir eine kurze Diskussion der aktuellen Lage – im Moment bewegt sich das globale Treibeis auf einer völlig neuen Kurve: http://greatwhitecon.info/2016/12/the-11th-key-science-moment-of-2016/
Aber das ist Meckern auf hohem Niveau – es war wieder eine gute Folge mit kompetentem Gesprächspartner und spannendem Thema. Klasse fand ich z.B. die Diskussion der F-Satelliten und ihrer Macken…
Stimmt, ich war weniger tief in dem Thema drin, das ist der Nachteil von “Hörerhilfe”. Und ja, Schwarzkörperstrahlung hätte ich wissen sollen :-) Und dieses Energy-Dingens hat mich auch verwirrt, das hat man ja auch bemerkt. Die aktuelle Lage hatte ich mit Absicht nicht so betont, weil das ja alle anderen Medien eh schon tun.
